CONCUSSION

HEAD INJURY POLICY

Head Injuries are of serious concern for players of all ages. The following is a statement by the IFC Members Board relating to our Head Injury Policy.

Injuries are a known risk of any contact sport. Recently, there has been great deal in the news regarding concussions and sports. Concussions are very dangerous because of their possible long term effects. A concussion is a brain injury. The best treatment is rest and time to allow the brain to heal. A player who is recovering from a concussion is at increased risk for a second concussion. This second injury may be much more severe and result in prolonged recovery and permanent damage.

To prevent this much more severe injury, many national organizations recommend, “When in doubt, sit them out!”

From the standpoint of IFC Soccer Club, it is very simple. If a player gets a head injury in a game or practice and has any signs of a concussion, the player will be removed from the field of play. The player needs to seek medical attention and is not allowed to return to practice or games until they have been released by a licensed health-care provider/qualified medic. Coaches will use their best judgment to determine if immediate medical attention is required. Player safety is our priority.

We have made available information sheets regarding concussions. You will also find a link to a very informative video. We encourage you to take 15 minutes to watch it. The Coaching Committee would be glad to answer any questions.

The following is a YouTube video made available by UW Medicine physicians. Please take a few minutes to watch the video that explains what to watch for and what actions to take if a concussion is suspected.
